The master who got drunk and miskenly slept with the housemaid in the dark room, needed everything about the kids to be clear and brought into the light. Nothing was to be left bleak and gloomy except to his inconsequential wife.
It was her voice the last thing left to be heard for him to go ahead and crown himself the true father of the twins.
If he was going to keep to his promise of not getting married to another wife, then Verona must have decided to accept his husband to adopt the children. But there was one question on her mind,
"Does it mean that the maid's children will be the heir to me and my husband's legacy. If I end up not having children then, I have no choice but to accept my fate."
So she started being reasonable, "I think I should stop fighting the Housemaid and do everything to bear at least a child for my husband."
That evening she walked to her husband and told him,
"My darling, I no longer want us to fight each other. I love you and don't want you to marry another woman,"
"Have you made your decision?"
"Yes, you can go ahead and adopt the kids, I mean Jaila's twins."
He lifted her up and hugged her with so much joy, "Thank you so much my dear understanding wife. I will not disappoint you."
"I want you to be happy."
"You are the best."
Then Verona walked away, telling him, "Let me serve dinner, but know that we will keep on trying if we can have our own kids, even if it's one."
"You are right," he accorded, as she walked away, he murmured within himself.
"So she is actually thinking that if those kids are not mine I will not do everything to even have an extra-marital affair that can bear me kids even if she is not aware. Though I know nothing is hidden under the son; one day I will have to tell her that those kids are actually mine, especially if the Housemaid is no longer there. But Jaila is more of a wife material than Verona, that is life, it happens."
So he went ahead named the kids, who actually bore his name as their last name.
One of them was called Ngoran Beri, and the other was named, Bumi Beri. Bumi made more sense to him because is literally meant, 'Wonders' and he always told the children,
"Like one of your names; you both are a result of a wonderful mistake. The mistake that turned out to be a miracle."
One day his wife heard him declaring it to them and was curious.
"Why is Bumi and Ngoran a miracle."
"The miracle that United us."
But she thought there was more to it than just what he said. As growth gradually calved out the real picture of children, one day while Verona was preparing for their wedding anniversary, the kids were registered in the vital registration register, because his wife approved of it. Two months later was their wedding anniversary and one of Verona's friends, she nurtured as an upcoming artist but she did become famous like her. The moment she saw those twins she said something that struck Verona's heart.
"Their father must be a very strong man,"
"Why do you think so," she asked and her friend said ignorantly because Verona had never told her that she did have kids, "They look more like their dad, your husband."
"It is not possible!" she exclaimed but didn't want to make it loud and clear that they were their adopted kids delivered by the maid. Then when her friend inquired,
"Why do you think it's impossible,"
"I was just joking, but my husband is a strong man."
Her statement instigated something on her mind and she thought.
"But is it possible my husband is actually the true father of these kids. I see the way he is so attached to them. Blood is thicker than water. Is that the reason he made everything possible to adopt them. After my anniversary first."
As she was still ruminating Jaila walked up to her and said,
"Please madam, I have finished frying the fish."
"You know tomorrow is my wedding anniversary, look for an old newspaper and wrap the fish inside. After that you join Abigail in the kitchen."
"Okay madam."
But when she slept that night over it, she shoved the idea away and decided not to give herself a heart attack over nothing. She had lured Abigail to find out if her husband had anything to do with Jaila but in every indication she was only the mother of his adopted kids. So the anniversary was the symbolic event that was going to cement their love.
It was vivid that Verona and Mr. Beri were so happy once again ever since the twins came into the picture and she didn't want to be the one to put sand in her gari.
But, what if one day the truth came out to the light? A story for another day.
