LOVE A THIEF
A Woman Who Gave Counterfeit Money to a Poor Hawker
Chapter 1
© Gambo Elvis
Every weekend, a young girl would hawk goods on the street for her aunt. One sunny afternoon, a well-dressed woman approached her and asked,
“If I buy your goods for 1,000 CFA, will you have change for a 10,000 note?”
“Yes ma’am,” the girl replied eagerly, thrilled by the chance to make such a big sale.
The woman, named Janabu, knew very well that the 10,000 CFA note she handed over was counterfeit. But she also knew the poor, naive girl would never be able to tell the difference. Smiling sweetly, she took her goods, pocketed the change, and vanished into the crowd.
The young orphan, completely unaware of the deceit, was simply overjoyed that she had made such a profit. She couldn't wait to get home and tell her aunt.
But fate had other plans.
On her way home, a young boy approached, pretending to be interested in buying something. The moment she let her guard down, he snatched her purse and bolted.
She cried and screamed for help, but the boy was long gone.
When she returned home empty-handed, her aunt was furious. She whipped her mercilessly, denied her dinner, and gave her chores so exhausting that she sat outside in the cold, still working well past midnight.
The next morning, as they headed to the school office to report that the exam money was gone, they stumbled upon a commotion. A large crowd had gathered, and in the middle of it was a boy being beaten badly.
“That’s him!” the girl cried. “Auntie, that’s the boy who stole my money!”
The aunt rushed forward, only to hear someone in the crowd shout, “This boy came to our shop yesterday and paid with a counterfeit 10,000 CFA note. We only discovered it was fake this morning.”
“I didn’t know it was fake!” the boy pleaded desperately.
Just then, someone in the crowd recognized him and ran to fetch his mother. Moments later, a worried woman pushed through the crowd to rescue her son.
As soon as the young girl saw her, her eyes widened.
“Auntie, that’s the woman who gave me the counterfeit note!” she exclaimed.
The truth hit everyone like lightning. The woman, Janabu, stood frozen. She had no idea that the fake money she used to cheat an innocent girl would end up in her own son’s hands—and now he was nearly lynched for it.
In a twist of poetic justice, Janabu was made to pay twice:
Once for the counterfeit note her son used at the shop
And again for the one he had unknowingly stolen from the orphan girl.
The woman who had tried to cheat a poor child ended up cheating herself—twice. She remained silent, too ashamed to admit the full truth, knowing it could ruin her.
She never dared to deceive anyone again.
The evil you do eventually finds its way back to you—sometimes double.
